When a routine surgery left Alex* (name changed for privacy) dependent on prescription painkillers, he never imagined the spiral that would follow. Prescribed painkillers for post-operative pain, Alex quickly developed a dependency, and when his prescriptions expired, he found himself sick with withdrawal symptoms. Desperate to relieve the physical and emotional pain, Alex turned to alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and other opioids to cope. The substances he was using provided temporary relief, but he knew it was leading him down a dangerous path.

“It felt trapped in a cycle I couldn’t break,” Alex recalls. “Every day became a mission to find something to help numb what I was feeling.”

The downward spiral culminated in a suicide attempt. Alex was hospitalized, but after discharge, with nowhere to go and no support, he ended up at a shelter. It was there that Alex was introduced to a case manager from the Family Resource Center, who would become the turning point in his journey.

“She’s my hero, and she honestly saved my life,” Alex says of his case manager. “Her support, reflections, and recommendations helped me tremendously in getting through a very difficult time. I owe her everything.”

With his case manager’s help in navigating the community system of care, Alex was able to secure stable housing and begin treatment services at Family Resource Center. For the first time, Alex felt hope. Regular therapy sessions provided a safe space for him to process his experiences and rebuild his sense of self-worth.

“If I didn’t have Family Resource Center as an anchor through a very tough year, I don’t know if I could have mustered the self-compassion to keep myself sober,” Alex shares. “Thanks to my case manager, I feel like I will become the better person I know I can be.”

Today, Alex is seeing a therapist regularly, has reconciled with family, and has found a job that not only helps sustain him financially, but also instills a sense of purpose.

Alex’s journey is proof that with the right support, recovery is possible.

“I’ve come a long way,” Alex says with a smile, “and I’m not looking back.”
